Thanks for your interest in being a summer camp counselor!

Read below to learn all about Summer Camp, how to be come a counselor, and to get started in signing up!

Summer Camp Counselors are anyone currently in Grades 9-12. We will be doing Camp this summer with St. Thomas the Apostle Parish in Crystal Lake and St. Bridget’s in Loves Park. Camp this year is taking place at Lutherdale Bible Camp in Elkhorn, Wisconsin from June 12-15.

This year’s counselor trainings will happen slightly different. We will have 5 trainings here at St. Mary’s for our counselors from our parish, and an all day training with the counselors from all three parishes. Then, as in the past, all of the counselors will go to camp one day early to get ready for the campers!

The training dates here at St. Mary’s are as follows:

  • Thursday, March 22nd
  • Thursday, April 19th
  • Thursday, April 26th
  • Thursday, May 3rd
  • Thursday, May 17th

Each of these trainings will take place from 6-7:30pm. They will be similar to our normal Discipleship Team gatherings and have youth ministers from the 3 parishes leading them. You need to make it to at least 4 of the 5 trainings to be a counselor.

There is an all day training at St. Bridget’s in Loves Park on Saturday, May 12th. We will leave from St. Mary’s at 8:00am to head up there and then will return to St. Mary’s by 6:00pm that night. In order to be a counselor, you need to be able to be present at this entire training.

Summer Camp this year will take place June 12-15. Counselors need to be present for the counselor night on Monday, June 11th. The exact time on Monday will be given as we get closer to that date.

Applications for Summer Camp Counselors are available on this website (see below!) or outside the Youth Ministry Office! The application deadline will be Friday, February 16, 2018. At that point, we will look at our numbers and within the following weeks let everyone know if you will be a counselor for camp this summer. Our decision will be based on your availability for all of the trainings and camp, making sure we have the right number of counselors from each parish as well as a good number of both male and female counselors, and reading through your application.

Once you have finalized the application and been accepted, you will be asked to officially register for camp and fill out the needed permission forms.

As we stated above, this year’s camp will be at a new camp and the cost is different than it has been in the past. In order to help keep costs from rising too much for the campers, the counselor fee is going to look a little bit different. This year’s counselor fee for camp is $325 (camper fee is $300).

We will be offering fundraising opportunities in the spring to cover costs for camp that will be able to help reduce your counselor fee if you help with them, but we also want to encourage you to do some fundraising for your own costs. Even now, you can begin to call neighbors, family members, and anyone else in your life who supports what you do and see if they want to help cover this cost for you.
